Vienna’s Parliament building, completed in 1883 and designed in Greek Revival style by Theophil Hansen, was not a random aesthetic choice: in the context of the 1870s constitutional debates, ancient Athens meant democracy, not empire. The building anchors the Ringstrasse at Volkstheater and was fully renovated and reopened in 2022 with a new visitor center that makes it properly accessible for the first time. The Pallas Athene fountain on the forecourt, added in 1902, continues the Athenian symbolism. Guided tours available; check parlament.gv.at for the current schedule. Allow 1-1.5 hours.
