Pannonisches Heimatmuseum

A regional heritage museum in Neusiedl am See documenting the human and natural history of the Pannonian lowlands, the flat steppe-like landscape that stretches from Austria's eastern edge into Hungary. The Neusiedlersee region is unlike anywhere else in Austria: reed-fringed, windswept, shaped by centuries of Hungarian cultural influence.

The Pannonisches Heimatmuseum in Neusiedl am See covers the human and natural history of Austria’s flattest and most unusual region, the Pannonian steppe zone where the country borders Hungary. The Neusiedlersee, a vast shallow reed lake barely a meter deep, defines the landscape here, and the museum grounds the story in local folk culture, the lake’s own history (it nearly dried up in the 1860s), and the region’s mixed Austrian-Hungarian heritage. Burgenland only became Austrian in 1921, which gives this corner of the country a distinctive character you won’t find in the Alps. Accessible by train from Vienna in about an hour.
