Neusiedl am See is the transit gateway to Austria's steppe lake, the Neusiedler See, a shallow UNESCO-listed body of water in the Pannonian lowlands that shares its southern shore with Hungary. The S-Bahn from Vienna Hauptbahnhof takes about 45 minutes, making this the easiest entry point into Burgenland's lake district. The town itself is functional rather than scenic, but it anchors the 120km cycling circuit that runs around the entire lake and connects to the wine villages of Rust and Podersdorf am See. The lake is shallow enough to wade in, warm enough for swimming by June, and lined with reeds that give it a character unlike any other Austrian water. Plan 2-3 days minimum to do the circuit properly.
