The Prunksaal (State Hall) of the Oesterreichische Nationalbibliothek (Austrian National Library) is the finest Baroque library interior in Europe. Fischer von Erlach’s 77-meter hall, completed in 1726, holds 200,000 volumes on dark walnut shelves under a ceiling fresco by Daniel Gran depicting the apotheosis of Emperor Charles VI. The library is on Josefsplatz behind the Hofburg. The building complex also houses the Globe Museum (world’s largest collection of historical globes), the Papyrus Museum, and the Esperanto Museum.
