Prague’s Old Jewish Cemetery holds an estimated 100,000 burials stacked in up to 12 layers beneath roughly 12,000 visible headstones. The density results from a centuries-long ban on expanding the burial ground beyond the Jewish quarter. In use from at least 1439 until 1787, the cemetery includes the tomb of Rabbi Judah Loew, the scholar associated with the Golem legend.
