The Nickelmuseum in Rottenmann (Cobaltstrasse 1) covers the history of nickel mining in the Styrian Erzberg region. The museum connects to the wider Erzberg mining complex, the largest open-cast iron ore mine in Central Europe, and documents the industrial history of nickel extraction in the surrounding valleys. The element nickel was named after a mining term from the Erzgebirge: “Kupfernickel” (copper goblin), coined by miners who couldn’t smelt a reddish ore they expected to be copper.
