Schladming is a medieval Styrian market town turned major ski resort, hosting World Cup alpine skiing events including the atmospheric night slalom on the Planai. The 2013 Alpine World Ski Championships transformed the resort’s infrastructure and scale. In summer, the Planai gondola pivots to mountain biking, making Schladming a genuine year-round destination. Train connections from Graz take about 2 hours; the drive from Salzburg is about 90 minutes via the A10. The compact Altstadt below the mountain is walkable and lively. Hotels range from budget to four-star, with most within walking distance of the main gondola station. Plan 4-6 days in winter to cover the Schladming-Dachstein ski area properly.
