Neuer Platz is Klagenfurt’s main square, rebuilt after the 1514 city fire on a Renaissance grid plan. The Lindwurmbrunnen dragon fountain (1590-1636) dominates the square; its dragon head was reportedly based on a fossil rhinoceros skull found in the local marshes in 1335, making it one of the earliest cases in Europe of fossil remains informing mythological imagery. The 1873 equestrian statue of Empress Maria Theresa stands alongside the much older dragon. Free access; central location; 10 minutes by tram from the Hauptbahnhof.
