Klagenfurt is Carinthia's capital and a genuinely pleasant city with a compact Renaissance old town, the Lindwurm dragon fountain (1593) as its emblem, and the Strandbad, one of Europe's largest freshwater lidos, on the Wörthersee lakefront. The lake reaches 26-28 degrees in a good summer. The Alter Platz and its arcades are the best walking area. About 3.5 hours from Vienna by train. The base for the Wörthersee lake circuit and the wider western Carinthia exploration.
