The Venus of Willendorf is 29,500 years old and small enough to fit in your palm. She lives in the Naturhistorisches Museum, which is almost certainly not the first thing visitors think of when they see this monumental Historicist building on Maria-Theresien-Platz.

The Naturhistorisches Museum (Natural History Museum) in Vienna faces the Kunsthistorisches Museum across Maria-Theresien-Platz. They are architectural twins, both opened in the 1880s as part of the Ringstrasse redesign. The NHM holds the Venus of Willendorf, a 29,500-year-old carved figurine found near the Wachau in 1908, one of the oldest human artworks in the world. The meteorite collection is one of the largest on earth. A rooftop terrace overlooks the Hofburg. Most visitors prioritize the Kunsthistorisches; the NHM collections and building are equally substantial and far less crowded. Wednesday to Monday, 9:00-18:30 (Wednesday until 21:00). Adults EUR 17.
