The Nationalpark Kalkalpen in the Upper Austrian Alps is Austria’s largest forested national park, protecting ancient beech and mixed woodlands designated as UNESCO World Heritage as part of Europe’s primeval beech forest network. The park holds Austria’s only Alpine lynx population. Trails connect it southward to Gesaeuse National Park, creating one of the longer wilderness corridors in the eastern Alps. The landscape is primarily forest rather than high-altitude rock, which makes it ecologically distinct from Austria’s better-known parks. The visitor center is in Molln, about 30 minutes by car from Steyr. Free entry. Best visited May to October; primeval forest trails accessible year-round.
