Steyr is a small Upper Austrian city at the confluence of the Steyr and Enns rivers, holding one of Austria’s most intact late Gothic and Renaissance urban cores. The Stadtplatz, the Bummerlhaus (c. 1497), and the Gothic church form an ensemble that most travelers to Linz and Salzburg overlook. Schubert composed the Trout Quintet here during his summer visits between 1819 and 1825. The Christkindl pilgrimage church nearby operates a seasonal post office in December that receives over a million letters from children.
