Prague’s Municipal House (Obecni dum) is the city’s finest Art Nouveau building, completed in 1912 on the site of the former Royal Court. Art Nouveau, or Jugendstil, was the turn-of-the-century style of organic ornament and curving forms; here it serves as a cultural statement about Czech national identity, most explicitly in the Mayor’s Room decorated by Alphonse Mucha with Slavic folk symbolism. Czechoslovak independence was declared from the building’s balcony on 28 October 1918. The Smetana Hall is the opening venue of the Prague Spring festival each May.
