The Muenzerturm (Mint Tower) in Hall in Tirol is the surviving fortification of Burg Hasegg, where the Habsburgs minted silver coins from Tyrolean ore beginning in the 1470s. The large-denomination silver Guldengroschen coined here in 1484 are direct ancestors of the Thaler, which gave the dollar its name. The tower and its coin museum tell the story of Hall’s role as a financial engine for the Habsburg Empire. Hall in Tirol is 10km east of Innsbruck, 20 minutes by regional bus.
