Mirabell Palace and Mirabell Gardens. Maybe you have heard about it because of the Sound of Music or because Mirabell is one of the must-see sights of Salzburg. Mirabell, however, especially the garden, is much more than a Sound of Music filming location or a touristy spot. At least if you have the insights this guide provides.
Mirabell is a decadent symbol of the former archbishop’s power. A history book and a collection of antique mythological tales. Mirabell is one of Salzburg’s most visited places and there is no way to skip it.
The garden is full of statues. There are 28 statues of Greek Heroes to be precise. There were also supposed to be 28 dwarfs but many of them disappeared. The baroque garden features the famous Do-Re-Mi steps from the Sound of Music, a hedge theater, the Pegasus fountain, and the grand staircase inside the palace depicting the founding story of Rome in eleven statues.
Free to enter. Open every day. The palace marble hall hosts over a thousand weddings per year and evening concerts.
