Mirabell Palace

Also known as Schloss Mirabell

Built in 1606 by Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau as "Altenau," a palace for his mistress Salome Alt. Renamed "Mirabell" by Markus Sittikus. The current baroque building is largely the work of Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt (1721). Today it serves as Salzburg's city hall. The Marble Hall is one of the finest baroque rooms in Austria.

Mirabell Palace in Salzburg’s Neustadt was originally built in 1606 by Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau for his mistress; Lukas von Hildebrandt gave it its baroque form in 1721, and after a fire in 1818 it was rebuilt in the simpler style seen today. The palace now houses the mayor’s office and a civil registry. The Marble Hall interior is one of the finest Baroque reception rooms in the region and occasionally open to visitors; check the Salzburg City website for access. The adjacent Mirabell Gardens are free and open year-round. The complex sits 10 minutes on foot from the Salzburg old town, at Mirabellplatz.
