Vienna’s Palace of Justice on Schmerlingplatz was set on fire in July 1927, when a crowd responding to a controversial court acquittal torched the building; the police response killed 89 people. Stefan Zweig called it the day Austria’s democracy began to die. The building was rebuilt and continues to house Austria’s Supreme Court; the dramatic Historicist atrium with marble columns and glass ceiling is free to enter on weekdays during court hours.
