Hundertwasserhaus

A municipal apartment building completed in 1985 by Friedensreich Hundertwasser, with undulating floors, facades of clashing colors and mosaic tiles, and trees growing from balconies and roof terraces. People live here, so the interior is off-limits. The exterior is the attraction. Hundertwasser designed the building as a direct argument against the straight lines and smooth facades of modernist architecture. You either find it joyful or garish; either reaction is accurate. The Kunst Haus Wien museum, two blocks away, holds his paintings and large-format designs and is worth combining for context. Address: Kegelgasse 36-38, 1030 Vienna.
