Vienna’s most photographed municipal apartment building, completed in 1985 after Chancellor Bruno Kreisky personally invited Friedensreich Hundertwasser to design it. The building has 53 apartments, 250 trees growing from its balconies and roof terraces, deliberately uneven floors, and a facade in colliding colors and mosaic tiles designed to reject every principle of architectural restraint. Hundertwasser took no fee. People live here; the interior is private. The Kunst Haus Wien museum across the street is the logical combination, holding Hundertwasser’s paintings and architectural designs. Exterior at Kegelgasse 36-38, 1030 Vienna.
