The Holocaust Memorial on Vienna's Judenplatz commemorates 65,000 Austrian Jews murdered during the Shoah. Rachel Whiteread's concrete sculpture, unveiled in 2000, takes the form of an inverted library: books fill the space, their spines turned inward, their pages facing outward, unreadable and uncountable.

The Holocaust Memorial on Vienna’s Judenplatz commemorates 65,000 Austrian Jews murdered during the Shoah. Rachel Whiteread’s concrete sculpture, unveiled in 2000, takes the form of an inverted, sealed library: books fill the interior with their spines turned inward, their pages facing outward and unreadable. The memorial was placed deliberately on Judenplatz, the site of Vienna’s medieval Jewish quarter, which was destroyed in the 1421 Vienna Gesera when the community was killed, expelled, or forcibly converted. The Museum Judenplatz beneath the square contains excavated remains of the medieval synagogue demolished in 1421. The memorial is always accessible and free. The museum has separate admission.
