The Hochtor Tunnel at 2,504 meters marks the highest point of the Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse and the Salzburg-Carinthia provincial boundary. The 311-meter tunnel passes under the Hochtor pass, used as a transalpine crossing since Roman times. Included in the road toll. Open May to October. The south face descent toward Heiligenblut is steeper and more dramatic than the Salzburg approach; allow time to stop on the Carinthian side.
