Heiligenblut’s church spire with the Grossglockner (3,798m, Austria’s highest peak) directly behind it is one of the most reproduced images in Austrian tourism. The village is the southern terminal of the Grossglockner High Alpine Road and the pilgrimage church contains a 15th-century Gothic altarpiece and a relic that has drawn visitors since the 10th century. Small mountain hotels; book well in advance for July-August. About 45 minutes from Lienz by car. The base from which serious Hohe Tauern hiking and Grossglockner climbing is organized.
