The Hochkoenig Massif at 2,941 meters is the highest peak in the Berchtesgaden Alps and the dominant visual presence in the Salzburg region south of the city. The Mandlwand cliff face above Werfen, visible from the A10 motorway, is part of the same massif. The Koenigsweg long-distance trail traverses the base of the massif over 3 to 4 days; shorter day hikes run from Maria Alm and Dienten. Always accessible; mountain huts require advance booking in summer. Pair with Werfen and the Eisriesenwelt ice cave below for a full day in the southern Salzburg alpine zone.
