The Hintersteinersee is a small glacial lake above Ellmau in the Wilder Kaiser foothills, sitting at around 800 meters in a side valley off the main Kufstein-Kitzbuehel corridor.

Above Ellmau; accessible by post bus from Woergl (rail connection from Innsbruck and Salzburg). A 30-minute walk around the lake; good swimming in summer. Combine with the Hartkaiserbahn gondola above Ellmau for a full Kaiser day.
