The Hintersteinersee is a small, calm glacial lake above Ellmau in the Wilder Kaiser foothills, with no motorized boats and clear views of the limestone cliffs. Free access; always open. Above Ellmau; accessible by post bus from Woergl (rail connection from Innsbruck and Salzburg). A 30-minute walk around the lake; good swimming in summer. Combine with the Hartkaiserbahn gondola above Ellmau for a full Kaiser day.
