Heldenplatz is the large open square between the Hofburg’s Neue Burg wing and the Ringstrasse in central Vienna, flanked by equestrian statues of Archduke Charles and Prince Eugene of Savoy. On 15 March 1938, Hitler announced the Anschluss to 250,000 people from the Neue Burg balcony here. There is currently no commemorative marker on the square for that event, a deliberate absence that reflects Austria’s contested relationship with its WWII history. The square itself is free and always accessible. U-Bahn to Herrengasse (U3). Pair with the Hofburg Palace complex immediately adjacent.
