Hauptplatz and Rathaus

Also known as Hauptplatz und Rathaus

Hartberg's Hauptplatz with the Rathaus (town hall) is the market center of this small Styrian town in the Oststeiermark (eastern Styria), a region that sees little international tourism despite its medieval town cores and gentle vine-covered hill landscapes.

Hartberg’s Hauptplatz in eastern Styria is the market center of a small medieval town on the old Graz-Hungary road. The main reason to stop is the adjacent Hartberger Karner, a Romanesque ossuary from 1167 with period frescoes, one of Austria’s oldest and best-preserved medieval charnel houses. Free to walk; the Karner has its own visiting hours. By car from Graz approximately 60 km east on the B54. Works as a stop when driving east toward the Hungarian border or south toward the Styrian wine roads.
