Hartberger Karner

The Hartberger Karner at Kirchplatz in Hartberg is a Romanesque ossuary from 1167, one of Austria’s oldest and best-preserved charnel houses, with period frescoes largely intact. Karner were built adjacent to churches to house exhumed bones when cemetery space ran out, and Hartberg’s cylindrical example is unusually complete as an architectural and painted program.
