Austria's highest peak at 3,798 meters, visible from the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Hoehe viewpoint on the Grossglockner High Alpine Road. The Pasterze glacier at its base is the longest glacier in the Eastern Alps (though rapidly retreating). Not climbable without mountaineering experience, but visible and accessible by road.

The Pasterze glacier at its base was once the defining feature of the view; decades of retreat have moved the ice front significantly back from where it stood when the road opened in 1935. Climbing the peak requires full mountaineering experience and equipment. Most visitors experience the Grossglockner from the viewpoint at 2,369 meters, which the toll road reaches from May to November. The southern approach from Heiligenblut in Carinthia is the more scenic entry. Pair with the Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse for the full alpine road experience.
