The view of the Grossglockner (Austria's highest peak at 3,798 meters) framed by the pointed spire of Heiligenblut's parish church is one of the most reproduced images of the Austrian Alps, appearing on calendars, tourism material, and travel books for more than a century.

The church spire at Heiligenblut against the Grossglockner glacier is one of the standard images of Austria, but the composition works because of genuine geometry: the 15th-century Gothic pilgrimage church sits on a ridge spur directly in front of the 3,798-meter summit, with nothing intervening. The church was built to house a relic said to contain the Holy Blood of Christ (Heiliges Blut in German), which is also the village’s name.
