Groppensteinschlucht

The Groppensteinschlucht is a gorge cut by the Moll river through the Hohe Tauern range near Mallnitz in Carinthia, one of the more dramatic natural features in the western Carinthian Alps. The gorge path follows the river through narrow passages and alongside cascades, with the canyon walls rising steeply on both sides.

Small entry fee; most dramatic in June and July at peak snowmelt. Mallnitz is reached by the Tauern railway shuttle tunnel (a car-carrying train through the mountain) from Schwarzach or by the Moll Valley from Villach. The village is a quiet entry point to the Hohe Tauern National Park, well off the main tourist routes.
