The Gottesackerplateau below the Hoher Ifen in the Kleinwalsertal is one of the most striking karst landscapes in the Austrian Alps: several square kilometers of fractured limestone blocks and channels at 1,800 to 2,000 meters, with no soil or vegetation, named the “God’s Field” for its barren appearance. Solid mountain footwear required; marked routes cross the plateau. The Kleinwalsertal is accessible only from Germany via Oberstdorf, making it one of the more unusual Austrian destinations: Austrian territory, German road, valley that faces north into Bavaria.
