Gontal Naturschutzgebiet / Pritz Hut

The Gontal Naturschutzgebiet is a protected valley above St. Michael im Lungau in the Lungau, the high alpine basin in the southeast of Salzburg province. The Pritz Hut is the mountain refuge at the upper end of the valley, reachable by a multi-hour hike through the protected landscape.

The Gontal Naturschutzgebiet above St. Michael im Lungau is a protected high alpine valley with the Pritz Hut mountain refuge at its upper end, 3 to 4 hours by trail from the village. The Lungau, the high basin enclosed by the Hohe Tauern to the north and the Nockberge to the south, is a UNESCO biosphere reserve with a distinctly isolated regional culture: its Samson processions (enormous folk figures carried through villages on feast days) are found nowhere else in Austria. St. Michael is 1.5 hours by train from Salzburg on the Tauern line. Book the hut overnight in advance.
