St. Michael im Lungau is a ski village in the Lungau, the high enclosed basin in southern Salzburg state, based below the Katschberg ski area that straddles the Salzburg-Carinthia border. The village has a resort character more pronounced than the nearby Tamsweg, with hotels oriented toward winter ski packages and summer hiking in the UNESCO biosphere reserve. Getting here requires a car or bus from Radstadt; the Lungau is intentionally remote. The Katschberg lift pass covers both sides of the pass. For the cultural depth of the Lungau, Tamsweg with its Samsonumzug tradition is the complementary visit. Plan 2-4 nights in winter to justify the journey.
