Gletscherweg Pasterze

The Gletscherweg Pasterze is a marked trail from the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Hoehe on the Grossglockner road down to the margin of the Pasterze, Austria’s longest glacier at 8 kilometers. Information stations along the trail document the glacier’s retreat: more than 3 kilometers of length lost since 1850, with the markers showing where the ice stood in each decade. The Grossglockner road toll is required to reach the starting point; the trail itself is 1 to 2 hours. The glacier was the road’s original reason for existing in 1935. What you see now is primarily the record of what is gone.
