The Gassel-Tropfsteinhoehle above Ebensee on the Traunsee opened for visitors in 1883, among the earlier show caves in Austria, with stalactites and stalagmites formed over millennia through limestone-filtered water. Guided tours run seasonally; bring a warm layer as the cave holds 8 degrees Celsius year-round. Ebensee is on the Traunsee rail line from Attnang-Puchheim. Note: Ebensee also has the Ebensee Memorial documenting the town’s wartime concentration camp history, which is worth visiting as a counterpart to the natural feature above.
