Ebensee sits at the southern end of the Traunsee in the Salzkammergut, where a salt-trade history meets a darker 20th-century layer. The Ebensee concentration camp, a subcamp of Mauthausen where approximately 8,500 prisoners died building underground weapons tunnels, has a memorial and museum open May to October. The Feuerkogel cable car above the town reaches 1,600 meters and opens hiking on a high alpine plateau year-round. Ebensee is quieter and more affordable than Gmunden at the north end of the lake. About 20 minutes from Bad Ischl by car.
