Gamsgrubenweg

The Gamsgrubenweg is a high-altitude path that runs along the edge of the Pasterze, Austria's longest glacier, at around 2,400 meters above sea level. It begins at the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Hoehe, the main viewing platform on the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, and traverses the moraine landscape left by the glacier's retreat.

The Gamsgrubenweg at the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Hoehe on the Grossglockner High Alpine Road runs along the moraine edge of the Pasterze, Austria’s longest glacier, at around 2,400 meters. The Grossglockner summit at 3,798m is in view throughout. Markers along the path show where the glacier surface stood in 1850 and at subsequent decades: the distance between those points and the current ice is the most direct way I know to see what climate change means at alpine scale. 1 to 2 hours. Grossglockner road toll required; open late May to early November. Bring a warm layer regardless of valley temperatures.
