The Salzbergwerk Ebensee has produced salt since 1604, and the visitor tour includes underground slides and a salt lake formed by ancient extraction chambers. Part of the Salzwelten network; moderate admission, generally open April to October; check salzwelten.at. Ebensee is 10 minutes by train from Gmunden on the Traunsee line. The town also holds the KZ-Gedenkstollen, a preserved tunnel from the WWII concentration camp where prisoners were forced to excavate underground armaments factories. The two underground sites are entirely different in character; visiting both gives a full picture of what this valley contains.
