The Durlassboden Stausee is a turquoise hydroelectric reservoir at 1,400m in the Gerlos valley of the Zillertal, accessible from Gerlos village (bus from Zell am Ziller). Free access; 1-3 hours for a walk around the reservoir and surrounding terrain. The Gerlos Alpenstrasse toll road above connects Tyrol and Salzburg and passes near the reservoir; the Krimml Waterfalls (Austria’s highest) are about 15 km on the Salzburg side of the pass. Combine with a Zillertal hiking or ski day for a high-altitude lake addition to the standard valley itinerary.
