Donauinsel

A 21-kilometer artificial island between the Danube and the New Danube, built as flood protection and now Vienna's largest free recreation zone. Swimming, cycling, barbecuing, running, and sunbathing happen along its entire length. The Copa Cagrana section near the Reichsbrucke has bars and restaurants.

The Donauinsel (Danube Island) is a 21-kilometer artificial island created between 1972 and 1988 as part of Vienna’s flood protection system. The project excavated 30 million cubic meters of earth and planted 1.8 million trees. Today it is Vienna’s largest free outdoor recreation area: 21 km of swimming, cycling, barbecuing, and running at no cost. The Copa Cagrana bar strip near Reichsbrücke has food and drinks; the FKK (nudist) section near Steinspornbrücke is legal and established. Every June, the Donauinselfest draws approximately 3 million visitors for three days of free concerts, making it one of the largest free music festivals in the world. U1 to Donauinsel station.
