The Donauinsel (Danube Island) is a 21.1-kilometer artificial island in Vienna created between 1972 and 1988 as flood protection infrastructure. It has since become Vienna’s largest free outdoor recreation area: 21 kilometers of beach, cycling paths, barbecue zones, and swimming access at no cost. The New Danube side has calm water and designated swimming areas; the Danube side has strong current. The annual Donauinselfest festival each summer draws around 3 million visitors over a weekend for free open-air concerts. U1 subway to Donauinsel station drops you onto the island directly.
