Burgruine Alt-Ems above Hohenems dates from around 1100, making it the older of the two castle sites on the same limestone cliff. Free and open year-round; trail access from the town. Best combined with the adjacent Burg Neu-Ems (1343) and the Hohenems Jewish Museum below. Hohenems is on the rail line from Bregenz.

Burgruine Alt-Ems
Burgruine Alt-Ems is the older of the two castle sites on the limestone cliffs above Hohenems, predating the adjacent Neu-Ems by roughly 250 years. Founded around 1100, it was the original seat of the Ems dynasty who gave the town its name, and it fell into disuse when the family built the more defensible Neu-Ems in 1343.
