The Prunksaal (State Hall) of the Austrian National Library at Josefsplatz 1 in the Hofburg is one of the most spectacular Baroque library interiors in the world: gold, white stucco, Daniel Gran ceiling frescoes depicting Emperor Charles VI, and 200,000 historic volumes in dark walnut shelving curving up to the painted vault. Designed by Fischer von Erlach and completed in 1723. Adults around EUR 8-10; open Tuesday to Sunday, Thursdays until 21:00. Five minutes from the Albertina on foot.
