The Arlbergpass at 1,793 meters connects Tyrol to Vorarlberg and marks the real cultural boundary between Bavarian-speaking and Alemannic-speaking Austria. St. Christoph am Arlberg at the summit is where a Hospice Brotherhood founded in 1386 ran one of Europe’s first organized alpine rescue operations. The pass road (B197) is open June to November; the Arlberg tunnel runs year-round and is tolled. The drive from St. Anton through to Stuben is a good scenic road with mountain views. St. Anton is on the Innsbruck-Bregenz rail line. Combine with Lech am Arlberg on the western side for a full Arlberg day.
