The Amethystwelt at Maissau contains the world’s largest open amethyst deposit: a 60-meter exposed vein of violet quartz crystals growing directly in the bedrock of a hillside in the Weinviertel. A protected geological monument since 2005 with a visitor center and shop. Adults around EUR 7-9; open April to October. About 80 km northwest of Vienna; car recommended. Good as a short stop on a Weinviertel road trip combined with the Wachau or Krems.
