Amethystwelt Maissau

The Amethystwelt at Maissau in the Weinviertel is the site of the world's largest open amethyst deposit, an exposed vein roughly 60 meters long where violet crystals grow directly in the rocky ground. The site has been a protected geological monument since 2005 with a small visitor center and an exhibition on the geology of the deposit.

Good as a short stop on a Weinviertel road trip combined with the Wachau or Krems.
