Altstadt Kufstein

Kufstein's old town is built at the foot of the fortress rock on the Inn river, and you can see the fortress from almost everywhere in it. The Roemerhofgasse has the painted burgher facades that get photographed most, and the Auracher Loechl inn at the end has been serving food and beer in some form since the 15th century.

The whole old town takes about 20 minutes to walk. Kufstein is on the Innsbruck-Salzburg main rail line; frequent trains from both. Free to walk the old town; fortress entry around EUR 11-14. The Hero’s Organ in the fortress, the world’s largest outdoor organ installed in 1931, plays automatically at noon and can be heard from the streets below. Combine old town and fortress for a 2-hour stop, or extend with the Hintersteiner See lake, 15 km south.
