Krems and its adjacent town of Stein form the eastern gateway to the UNESCO Wachau valley, where the Danube gorge wine landscape ends and the Vienna plain begins. The old town has Baroque townhouses, hidden courtyards, and the Landstrasse pedestrian zone. Direct train from Vienna in about 1 hour; also accessible by Danube boat. Free to walk; the Kunsthalle Krems has a paid program. Wine tasting at local estates is the logical afternoon extension. September and October bring the harvest season and the best weather. Combine with Durnstein (15 km upstream) for a single Wachau day.

Krems and Stein are technically one municipality now but they feel like different towns that grew together: Krems is the commercial market town with the broader Landstrasse shopping street, Stein is the smaller, quieter wine town with the Minoritenkirche converted into an exhibition space.
