Altstadt Hallein

Hallein's old town sits on a flat island between the Salzach river and the Kothbach stream, which meant it was both protected and occasionally flooded for most of its history. The burgher houses along the Kornsteinplatz and the Bayrhamerplatz reflect the salt trade wealth that made Hallein the Salzburg archbishops' most important revenue source.

The Kornsteinplatz and Bayrhamerplatz preserve the burgher house character of a prosperous salt trade town. Free to walk; 15 minutes from Salzburg by S-Bahn. The Keltenmuseum in the old town holds a significant Celtic archaeology collection linked to the pre-Roman salt mining culture that gives the Hallstatt period its name. The Durrenberg salt mine tour is a good half-day extension above the town.
