Altstadt Hall in Tirol

Hall in Tirol was richer than Innsbruck for most of the medieval period, which is why its old town looks the way it does. The salt trade from the Halltal mine and the imperial mint made Hall the financial and industrial center of the Tyrol, and the townhouses that line the Oberer Stadtplatz and the arcaded streets are the physical evidence of that wealth.

Hall in Tirol’s old town is the largest preserved medieval town center in western Austria, built on salt and silver wealth that made Hall more important than Innsbruck for most of the medieval period. The arcaded streets, the Oberer Stadtplatz, and the continuous Gothic and Renaissance townhouses are the physical evidence of that prosperity. The imperial mint operated here; the Mint Tower is visitable for around EUR 5-7. Take the S3 train from Innsbruck, 15 minutes. Free to walk the old town. Combine with Schwaz, 10 km further up the Inn valley, which has the silver mine museum in the largest non-ecclesiastical Gothic hall building in the German-speaking world.
