The Alter Platz is Klagenfurt’s medieval market square and the pedestrian heart of the old town. The elongated form is characteristic of medieval trade squares; the facades are largely Baroque burgher houses from the 17th and 18th centuries. The 1680 Trinity Column at the center is a Baroque plague monument comparable to Vienna’s Pestsaule. Free and always accessible; 10 minutes on foot from the train station. Combine with the Wörthersee lake, 5 km west of the center, for a Klagenfurt day that covers both old town and water.
